What should a software handover include?

A launch is more useful when your team knows what it owns, how it runs and how to get help.

Document ownership and access

Agree source-code ownership and third-party licensing in the contract. Inventory repository, domain, hosting, email and service accounts, with access appropriate to each responsibility.

Make operation repeatable

Request setup and deployment instructions, environment-variable names, backup and recovery guidance, and key workflow documentation. Never place secret values in a public document.

Define acceptance and training

Review agreed acceptance criteria and known issues. Walk through important workflows with the people who will operate the system.

Separate defects, support and new features

Specify the scope and duration of any warranty, support hours, issue priorities and communication channels. New requirements should follow a clear estimation and approval process.
